Sample Itinerary:13 Days of Eastern Turkey

DAY 1: HOME / ISTANBUL
Arrival in Istanbul. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.

DAY 2: ISTANBUL
Full-day of sightseeing in Istanbul includes the Topkapı Palace, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome,  St. Sophia and Grand Bazaar. Overnight in Istanbul.

DAY 3: ISTANBUL / TRABZON
Morning flight to Trabzon. After lunch, visit several of the Byzantine churches, the Cankaya Hill with Ataturk’s residence, and the Kisarna springs. Dinner and overnight in Trabzon.

DAY 4: TRABZON
Morning excursion to the Sumela Monastery, built in the XIVth century. It is the most important Byzantine monument of the region and is situated on a cliff 1000 feet above the alley floor and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Return to Trabzon for dinner and overnight in Trabzon.

DAY 5: TRABZON / ERZURUM
Morning drive to Erzurum through the famous Zigana Pass at an altitude of 6500 feet. Afternoon sightseeing in Erzurum will include the Yakudiye Medrese, the Ulu Mosque from 1179, the Double Minaret Medrese which is masterpiece of Selcuk Art and the Hatuniye Türbe. Dinner and overnight in Erzurum.

DAY 6: ERZURUM / KARS
Drive to Kars via Horasan and Sarıkamış. Arrival in Kars in earlyafternoon and sightseeing the Citadel and Church of the Apostles. Dinner and overnight in Kars.

DAY 7: KARS / DOGUBEYAZIT
Full-day excursion to Ani, located on the river that constitutes the Turkish-Russian border. Ani was founded in the IXth century and has many interesting remains such as the cathedral, city walls and gates. Afternoon sightseeing in Doğubeyazıt including the citadel built at the time of the Urartian Kingdom and the Ishak Passa Palace and Mosque of the 17th century. Dinner and overnight in Dogubeyazit.

DAY 8:DOGU BEYAZIT / VAN
Drive to Van via Patnos. Dinner and the overnight in Van.

DAY 9: VAN
In Van visit the Citadel and the Archaeological Museum which houses mainly Urartian remains. Drive to Toprakkale, a few miles north of Van and Erciş whose
ruins are partly covered by marshes. If time permits, visit Adilcevaz, another city and which has several turbes, a citadel, and some mosques dating from the 16th century. Dinner and overnight in Van.

DAY 10: VAN / DIYARBAKIR
Drive to Diyarbakır via Tatvan. Dinner and overnight in Diyarbakır.

DAY 11: DIYARBAKIR/KAHTA
Excursion around Diyarbakır and Mardin, Diyarbakır dates from the pre-Assyrian period. The three- mile-long Roman walls of black basalt still encircle the town. Mardin (formerly Marida) has a Roman citadel and some Ottoman remains. Drive to Derzafaren, where a monastery from the 5th century can be seen. Drive to Kahta. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 12: KAHTA / GAZİANTEP / ISTANBUL
Morning departure (by sunrise) to go up to Mt. Nemrut to visit the city of Commaganes. Departure for Urfa (formerly Edessa).Further on is Harran, a small village with roof’s shaped like ant-hills. Continue to Gaziantep for flight to Istanbul. Overnight inIstanbul.

DAY 13: ISTANBUL / HOME    
Transfer to the airport for the flight to the next destination.
