More than 100000 Australian war dead lie everywhere around the world – but no other place has the resonance of Gallipoli. It is because of the unique location and terrain, the classical associations, the preservation of the battelfield; the Anzac legend but mostly it is because Gallipoli, by popular acclaim, has come to represent the birth of two nations.
There is not much to say about “why to visit” Gallipoli. Ataturk’s statement is a good reason to go and the experience the area in person.
“Those heroes that have shed their blood and lost their lives… you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side her in this country of ours.
…You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. And having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.” ATATURK
